本科的倒数第二个学期，以及整个2008年就么过去了。不出意外的话， 我也很快就要从现在住的地方搬出去了。留一点什么东西在这里，纪念一下即将告别的361 Euclid吧。

和大多数留学生不同，我从一开始就没有住过学校，也没有买过meal plan，太贵了。像我这样的人，有一个狗窝蹲就行了，只要有张床，有个地方放电脑足已。Apartment对我来说实在太奢侈。 于是来加之前就联系了老刘，2005.8.26， 从到多伦多的第一天我就开始住在这个100多年的老房子里。我没有精力搬来搬去，其间也只回国一次，不到三个星期，所以一住就是三年半。几乎所有我认识的留学生期间都至少过一次家。这老房子，所有的东西也就是正好凑合，基本上满足个起码要求吧。要说真正让人非常满意的，大概也就只有这条路名了–”Euclid Avenue”.

最初的两年，很受老刘一家照顾。因为自己背景，也因为受他们影响，生活得一直非常简朴。学着做饭，自己修单车，从各种各样的promotions里想方设法节省。我几乎没有花钱在外面理过头发，每次都是自己在家里，对着厕所里的镜子，老刘帮我理，我再帮他理。反正每次理得乱七八糟了，过几个星期长回来了就看不出来了，何况我在这边也几乎没有怎么socialize过。还记得2005年底，每个周五晚上在后面的garage里整理传单，然后周六一大清早载着上千份广告，报纸，传单到North York挨家挨户去发， 搞到中午，腿都跑断。后来又改成周六的晚上12点去bloor上的店铺去发，我在多伦多的日子就是那样开始的，最初上大一的光景倒是记得没那么清晰了。此外，也很怀念老刘家最开始的那只猫。它常喜欢趴在我房里那个旧沙发上，挺贴我，却也很凶。家里那时从来不闹老鼠，都被他吃了，还到外面去抓。经常在外面和猫猫狗狗打架，身上染红了回来，下次又去打。它会自己开门，回来的时候还会到我窗前叫我给它开门。可惜后来一次跑出去了就再没回来了。

2006年夏，在iQua做了一个暑假后，正好新宇要找新房住，就把他拉了过来。神级别的人物。一年到头，几乎每天都是一大早去学校，晚上12点回来。整天都在实验室里做事。过年，圣诞也不例外。但他前两年半运气不好，没有出Paper。最后半年才一鸣惊人，一堆牛Paper一起出。 势所必然吧，他前两年多的苦闷，老天也看不过去的。非常为他高兴。可惜来得晚了一点，不然肯定不只去umich了。他大概是我身过见过的”梅花香自苦寒来” 的最好诠释了。2007年夏每天和他和冯宸在iQua做到转钟再回来，偶尔一起玩玩合金弹头，非常怀念。和新宇住在一起的两年，看着这样的标杆，精神收获是很丰富的。相信iQua其他人也有这样的感觉吧。当然，这小子每餐必有土豆和他做的一些莫名其妙菜给我印象也很深刻。他这种极其耐得住苦闷的家伙，走到哪里都不会有问题的（前提是有土豆）。 以后应该还有见面的机会。

2007年底，老刘他们家搬去了condo，我和新宇还帮了忙。后来我就从原来的小房挪到了现在这个大房。 正好国防科大的王教授来iQua做Visiting Prof，我和新宇就把他拉来一起住。三个人都在iQua做过，经常扯扯谈，讨论一下问题什么的，非常不错。偶尔三人在一起改善一下伙食，来一火锅或者包包饺子什么的。王教授做访问学者只有一年，基本上在多伦多该去的，该看的，该玩的都过了一遍。不像我和新宇，一直连Niagara和wonderland都没有去过 ，CN Tower也没上过。王教授也挺不容易的。和我这样在外面游荡惯的家伙不同，他老婆孩子都在长沙，看得出有多惦记家里。他在国内的生活条件远比在这里优越，却也能和我们一起在这个狗窝似的老屋子里呆上一年。

三年多的时间，一晃就过了。仿佛就是不久之间，借工具给我修单车的房东老头都还没有去世，还经常和我打招呼。今年8.31号，新宇离开去了Michigan.  前几天，12.17王教授回长沙去了。剩下的半个多月时间，除了整天呆在一楼很少出来的房东老太太，就只有我一个人天天出入这三层的老房子。一种谈谈的久违了的感伤侵袭而来，不免让人有一些怅惋。

Halcyon Days, 应该是对我在361 Euclid三年多生活最简单确切的概括吧。总体上稳定、波澜不惊的日子伴随的是简单朴质的生活和学业上难得的专注， 平谈却很让人回味。毫无疑问，在未来相当长的一段时间内，从另一个地方，重新开始，这样的生活还将是我所向往的。

子女们：

财富虽然是每个人都喜欢的事物，但它并非与生俱来，同时也不是任何人可以随身带走。人经由各自努力程度之不同，在其一生当中固然可能累积或多或少之财富，然而当生命终结，辞别人世之时，这些财富将再全数归还社会，无人可以例外。

因此如果我们透视财富的本质，它终究只是上天托付作妥善管理和支配之用，没有人可以真正拥有。面对财富问题，我希望你们每一个人都能正确予以认知，并且在这样的认知基础上营造充实的人生。

我本出身于贫困家庭，历经努力耕耘，能够有所成就。在一生奋斗过程中，我日益坚定的相信，人生最大的意义和价值所在，乃是藉由一己力量的发挥， 能够对于社会作出实质贡献，为人群创造更为美好的发展前景，同时唯有建立这样的观念和人生目标，才能在漫长一生当中持续不断自我期许勉励，永不懈怠，并且 凭以缔造若干贡献与成就，而不虚此生。

基于这样的深刻体会，因此我希望所有子女也都能够充分理解生命的真义所在，并且出自内心的认同和支持，将我个人财富留给社会大众，使之继续发挥促进社会进步，增进人群福祉之功能，并使一生创办之企业能达到永续之经营，长远造福员工与社会。

与此同时，我也殷切期盼所有子女，在创业与日常生活中，不忘以服务奉献社会、造福人群为宗旨，而非只以私利做为追求目标，如此才能建立广阔和宏伟的见识及胸襟，充分发挥智能力量，而不负于生命之意义。（来源：环球时报）

There are certainly things I should learn from the process of GRE preparation and the actual test.  The verbal and writing parts are not easy.  But that shouldn’t have been the reason for it to look so much more scary than it is to me.  The fear for a GRE blunder had bothered me a lot, and to some extent it severely affected some my other plans. I should have followed Da’s advice to take it long before today. In fact,  I did just as what he predicted; Two weeks,  that’s exactly how long I seriously prepared for it,  no scary and detailed half-year or 3-month study plan.  I spent a weekend memorizing about half of the vocabulary I need from the “blue bible”.  Most of my preparation was done in the previous two weekends.

Take it easily.  Afterall,  who really believes that knowing something like “door:room = hatch:hold” got to do with your graduate school success in electrical engineering? The whole thing is just ridiculous, more ridiculous than having politics paper in graduate school entrance exams in China.

Things just crowd into this semester. I have 5 courses: DSP, Error Control Codes, Algorithms and Data Structures, Anthropology and Design Project, among which, Error Control Codes is a graduate level course,  taught by my summer research and design project supervisor, Prof. Kschischang. The design project can be very involving and it is linked to my research topic on overlapped class network coding, with some simulation and coding computation on GPU.  On the other hand, this research topic, way too complicated to be finished in one summer, has to be carried forward into the term.  And we are looking forward to produce something before the deadline of NetCod 2009 on Nov. 1st.  Besides all these, of course,  I have to submit a set of graduate school applications.  I am yet to decide on the set of schools to apply to. But most probably I will be fighting for the slim chance at those very top schools in EECS or ECE, with my area of focus on communication, information theory and networking.  Lastly, I got to work on GRE, which will take place in late Oct.  I cannot afford to screw up on any of these.  So far, things still looks smooth. Maybe it because the nice and cool weather keeps me refreshed.

The past summer and the new term have also marked a number of changes.  I am starting to write something on wordpress, as suggested by a few people.  On the other hand I set up a homepage at U of T individuals, though it still at a quite rough stage. I also started managing my schedules extensively using google calendar on zengweifei@gmail.com. All my friends interested are welcomed to add my schedule under this email address.  My working environment now is completely under linux/ubuntu, windows OS on my machine is now solely for recreational purpose.  I am also switching from Subversion to Mercurial as my SCM software. I found the idea of Distributed Version Control very natural and comfortable.  Furthermore, it is still compatible with the traditional client-server model.

BTW,  there has been a raccoon sneaking into my house looking for food these days.  I managed to trap him in the staircase and my housemate took a load of pictures of him.  I fed him with some cooked meat and corns twice and he became less alert about me.
